ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI service
ChatGPT is a generative AI service developed by OpenAI. Its public release in late 2022 helped introduce generative AI to a worldwide audience. Users can ask questions and give instructions in ordinary language through a chat interface.
What can ChatGPT do?
- Write and revise: Emails, proposals, blog drafts, and other documents
- Summarize and translate: Condense long material or translate between languages
- Think with you: Generate ideas, plan a trip, or organize a difficult decision
- Research: Use web search to check current information and sources
- Work across media: Generate images or answer questions about an uploaded image
Its broad range is one of ChatGPT’s main strengths. The mobile app also supports voice conversations.
Is there a free version?
The free plan is enough for many ordinary uses. Paid plans generally offer access to more capable models, higher usage limits, and additional tools. Starting with the free plan makes it easier to decide whether the paid features solve a real need.
The name combines “Chat” with GPT, the model family behind the service. A name such as GPT-5 refers to a model, while ChatGPT refers to the product through which people use models and tools.
How to get better results
Specific instructions usually produce better answers than vague ones. State the goal, relevant conditions, intended audience, and desired format. Important factual claims should still be checked against original sources because even current models can hallucinate.
For example, instead of “Write an apology email,” say, “Write a concise but polite email to a client apologizing for a delivery delay caused by late parts. The new delivery date is next Friday.” Then refine the draft with follow-up requests such as “Make it warmer” or “Cut the length in half.”
