The point where prediction breaks down
The technological singularity is the hypothesized turning point at which AI exceeds human intelligence and begins building better AI itself, making progress explosive and unpredictable. The futurist Ray Kurzweil popularized it with a prediction of roughly 2045, and that date is still the one most often quoted.
What is supposed to happen
The mechanism is recursive self-improvement. If a system smarter than its designers exists, it can design a better successor, and the rate of improvement accelerates past the point where people can follow it. That loop is the core of the argument.
Predictions about what comes after diverge sharply, from curing disease and ending poverty to losing control entirely. Given that the term is defined as the point where prediction fails, nobody can honestly describe what lies beyond it.
Is it actually coming?
Experts disagree. Some point to the pace of recent progress and argue it will arrive sooner than predicted; others argue there are physical and theoretical limits to runaway self-improvement. As with AGI, the vagueness of the definition makes the debate harder to settle.
What can be said with confidence is that you do not need to wait for such an extreme scenario — AI is already changing work and society.
How to read the word
The singularity functions less as a forecast than as a prompt for thinking about how to respond to AI progress. When you see it in an article or a book, the useful habit is to ask what scope is being discussed and on what evidence, rather than accepting or dismissing it outright.
It is often confused with AGI. AGI means matching human breadth; the singularity means the explosive transition beyond that. AGI is usually treated as a precondition for it.
