Why it gets discussed
The argument for ASI is the same recursive loop that underpins the singularity: once an AI is smarter than its designers, it can design something better still, and capability could climb past human understanding. If that happened, it might solve problems like disease and climate change — and it might also become something people cannot control. That dual possibility is why major labs fund alignment research.
How to read the term
ASI is theoretical today. Experts disagree not only about timing but about whether it is achievable at all. What has changed is that executives at major AI companies now use the word publicly, so it is no longer purely science fiction. When it appears in the news, two things are usually enough: it means the stage past AGI, and it is always discussed with hope and risk together.
OpenAI has framed safe development of superintelligence as a goal, and Meta has created a dedicated superintelligence research group. The term has moved into corporate roadmaps, and its presence in the discourse is likely to grow.
