OpenRouter provides access to AI models from many companies through a single API and a single balance.

One endpoint for many models

OpenRouter gives access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and others through a single point of entry, with one API format and one account balance covering many models.

There is no model called OpenRouter. Like a booking site that aggregates restaurants, it connects you to many models and the providers that run them. It is primarily a developer API, though there is a browser chat interface for trying things.

What it is useful for

  • Comparing the same instruction across several models
  • Switching model by purpose or by price
  • Changing which model your own app calls, through one API
  • Failing over to a different provider during an outage
  • Consolidating payments to several companies into one balance

Models differ in pricing, speed, input length, image support, and tool use. Even the same model can differ in speed and data handling depending on which provider serves it.

Compared with Poe and official services

Poe also puts several assistants in one interface but centers on ordinary users chatting in an app. OpenRouter suits people building with an API and those who want to choose the model and the provider precisely.

Official ChatGPT and Claude services include their own memory, file management, voice, and dedicated agents. Selecting a model from the same family through OpenRouter does not give you those features.

Privacy and cautions

OpenRouter states that it does not retain prompts and responses unless you enable logging or data sharing. The providers that actually run the models each have their own retention and training policies.

Before sending confidential material, check the provider’s policy and, where necessary, restrict yourself to providers that do not retain data. Watch for exposed API keys, insufficient balance, and models being renamed or discontinued.
