Mythos-class capability, generally available
Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic’s highest-tier Claude model, announced in 2026. Anthropic describes it as bringing Mythos-class capability — beyond what it had previously made generally available — to general use, with additional safety measures in place.
It targets software development, knowledge work, image understanding, and scientific domains, and the gap against standard models widens as work gets longer and more complex.
What Mythos-class means
Mythos-class is Anthropic’s designation for its most capable models. Fable 5 is not Mythos 5 itself; it is positioned as Mythos-class capability made available to general users, with safety mechanisms restricting the highest-risk areas.
The useful framing is that Fable sits above standard Claude, while Mythos remains a research and specialist tier with a narrower audience.
What it is good at
- Taking work whose requirements are still vague and turning it into a design or a direction
- Reading long documents and multiple constraints while keeping the whole consistent
- Approaching problems that previously failed from a different angle
- Leaving behind reusable procedures rather than a single answer
For short questions answered quickly, a lighter model is often enough. Fable 5 suits work with enough difficulty and context to use its capability.
Choosing between models
You can divide the work: Fable 5 for planning, design, and specification — deciding what should be built — and Codex for implementing what has been decided. Using Claude Opus 4.8 for everyday questions and routine implementation, and switching to Fable 5 only for the hard parts, is equally practical.
Availability by plan may change. And even the top model is not always right: have a person verify the reasoning and the result for important decisions and anything you publish.
Subscription availability
From 20 July 2026, Claude Fable 5 is included in Max and Team Premium up to 50% of each plan’s usage limit. On Pro and Team Standard it is not part of the standard subscription allowance and is used through usage credits; alongside the change, Pro and Team Standard users received a one-time $100 credit. Terms may change, so check the Usage screen in Claude and the official pricing page.
