NotebookLM Is Now Gemini Notebook: What Changed Beyond the Name, and the Second Brain as a Workspace

On 16 July 2026, Google announced that NotebookLM would be renamed Gemini Notebook. Having begun as Project Tailwind and established itself as the AI that reads your documents, NotebookLM formally joins the Gemini brand.

From the name alone it reads as NotebookLM being absorbed into Gemini, but Google says it will continue as a standalone service. This is less a change of signage than a declaration of a move from a document store to a research environment connected across Google.

What has not changed: answers grounded in your own material

Gemini Notebook’s core is the same as NotebookLM’s. Add PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio, and Google Docs as sources, and ask questions grounded in their contents. Answers cite the passages used, so you can go back to the original and check.

If an ordinary chat AI is a partner answering from broad knowledge, Gemini Notebook is a dedicated librarian who has read the material you handed over. Comparing multiple documents, summarizing, study guides, audio overviews — features for understanding material afresh — remain the core.

Change 1: running code inside a notebook

The significant addition is that each notebook gets a secure cloud computer, so code can be written and run. Loading tables and numerical data, performing calculations and analysis, and answering from those results all become possible.

At announcement it is available to Google AI Ultra and some Workspace customers, with a rollout to Pro users on the web over the following weeks. Availability therefore depends on when you read this and on your plan.

Change 2: notebooks sync with the Gemini app

Notebooks can be created and used from the Gemini app, with contents syncing to the standalone Gemini Notebook. It becomes easier to switch to your own material to check something in the middle of an ordinary Gemini conversation.

Being able to open the same notebook from either side brings together what used to be separate entry points — NotebookLM for research, Gemini for everyday questions. When you need answers strictly grounded in your sources, though, it is safer to stay aware of which interface you are in and which sources are in use.

Change 3: extending into Google Search’s AI Mode

Google says notebooks will also become usable from Google Search’s AI Mode. Moving between new information found in search and the material you have accumulated creates a cycle: return findings to the notebook, and carry them into the next search.

The more Gemini Notebook is used across Google, the more it becomes a research foundation for an individual or a team rather than a standalone tool for uploading documents and asking questions.

The second brain moves from a store to a workspace

Until now, a second brain has mostly meant accumulating your own records in something like Obsidian and searching them when needed. When the AI reads the material, calculates inside the notebook, and can be reached from other Google services, the second brain shifts from a place to remember things to a place to think and work alongside.

Gemini Notebook is a Google cloud service, though. Where the data lives, and what it is good at, differ from Obsidian, where you manage Markdown files yourself. A combination is conceivable: Obsidian for long-term storage and free editing, Gemini Notebook for source-grounded summarizing, audio, and analysis.

The name changed; checking the sources did not

Even an AI grounded in source material can misread a table or drop something from a summary. For decisions that matter, follow the citations attached to the answer back to the original text and figures. If you are adding confidential material, check your organization’s rules and how your plan handles data.

For anyone attached to the NotebookLM name there is something wistful about this, but from an AI that reads documents to a research notebook you can carry around inside Google, the rename to Gemini Notebook captures a service entering its next stage.
